A silly favorite rediscovered

I first encountered this book in my public library when I was but a lad in school. I had not read the Dale Carnegie original which this parodies, but the twisted humor grabbed me from the dedication page. When I found it in a digital version, I did not hesitate to buy it. Parts of it now seem silly and puerile but after all these years I still guffaw.

Life changing and inspiring!

I first read the book over 40 years ago. It was a tattered first edition found at a book sale. It changed my life! I had mine re-bound in Genuine Leather with Gold Letters - as befitting a sacred text. It has a special place on my book shelf. There are powerful truths in this book. It's not for the feint of heart. Now that it's available in paperback my Christmas shopping is simplified. If, in fact, I gave Christmas Gifts. Because, if I did, then I obviously didn't take the lessons of this book to heart...

A Veritable Guide to Instant Disrepute

In 1936 Dale Carnegie, esteemed speaker and motivator, published his masterpiece on human relations entitled, How to Win Friends and Influence People. A year later, Irving Tressler followed up with a companion guide for those moving in the opposite direction.

I happened upon this oddity while browsing through the shelves of the library, and borrowed it to see what stuff the writer was made of. It must have been hard stuff. For in the book you will see chapters with headings like, How to Make People Dislike You Instantly; How to Make a Poor First Impression, Give a Dog a Bad Name, etc. Every single one lives up to its promise.

This book is sidesplitting; actually I got so weak laughing I could not lift it up. The entire text was swallowed up at one sitting (OK maybe one lying).

I admit it is entirely a parody of Dale Carnegie's work up to the introduction by Thomas Lowell (Carnegie's was by Lowell Thomas). Yet it is more than a caricature, because some of the advice can be applied. After all, who has not had an uncle Ernie who drops to the house unannounced, or a friend, Jimmy who pesters you to double date with him every weekend?

As you consider your mortality and your declining privacy, as you ponder how to enjoy these transient pleasures, you might just be tempted to apply the untried and untested principles of this exotic burlesque: How to Lose Friends and Alienate People.

This 112-page papercover book is ideal for farmers, extension educators, soil conservationists, and crop advisors. Areas covered include the contribution of earthworms to good soil tilth, practical identification of common genera and species, biology of earthworms, earthworm habitat under various cultural practices, how to increase earthworm populations on the farm, effects of 193 agricultural chemicals on earthworms and a question and answer section. The author presents research findings from scientists as well as anecdotal data from farmers and others 'in the know'. An easy read, this book is a great place to start learning about earthworms under agricultural conditions. Many, many authorities and other contacts are listed in the back of the book. If you want to decrease run-off, lower your fertilizer bill, reduce erosion and make more money on your farm or for your grower clients, this book is the place to start.

Basic, or even simplistic.

This book covers a small scope of using worms in row cropping systems. My question was, when buying this book, what to feed the soil to feed the worms, and how to manage my worm population on my market farm. Most of the book was making an effort to convince me that worms are good, and the remainder drew on studies of how not to kill worms in your field.

Not worth the paper its printed on...

This was the most disappointing book I think I've ever bought. It appears to be the work of a ninth grade high schooler who copy and pasted articles from Agriculture magazines of the early 90's.
If you knew absolutely nothing about worms or agriculture it might be a starting point. As far as being a handbook for Farmers or even gardeners it was a total fail.
It appears the authors wanted to please everyone and spent very little time sharing anything about how to use worms on farms. The articles that hinted that farmers were using them were limited to buying boxes or barrels of them from Canada and dumping them in some field somewhere and then hoping for the best.
There were some small rays of sunshine. They did talk a little about testing square foot plots in a field and extrapolating that worm population as to the overall worm count per acre. I think one search of Google would have brought that up.
I've bought a lot of books on varied subjects. Spent a lot on gardening and other resources this is the worst investment in 40 years.

Coozan Dudley LeBlanc traces the life of this singular Cajun entrepreneur who, almost singlehandedly, revolutionized American product advertising. He spent millions to promote Hadacol, his alcohol-saturated, vitamin-mineral patent medicine.

With heavy advertising, contests, and the Hadacol caravan-- a traveling road show featuring a dazzling cast of Hollywood stars, beauty queens, and circus antics-- LeBlanc parlayed his elixir into an amazing overnight success. America had never seen anything like it.

But before the 1950s Hadacol phenomenon, LeBlanc had made his mark in the hurly-burly politics of his native Louisiana. As a state legislator, he had championed a steady stream of legislation to increase benefits to the poor and aged. Bold, flashy, and determined, he frequently clashed with the Louisiana Kingfish, Huey Long, in a power struggle that ended only with Long's assassination.

About the Author
Floyd Martin Clay conducted a considerable amount of research to produce his biography of Dudley J. LeBlanc. Mr. Clay initiated the book while LeBlanc was still alive and active, and this enabled him to produce an accurate and incisive biography.
