The book reunites the generative-transformational tradition initiated by Chomsky--which views the formal syntactic component as entirely autonomous---with the older, strongly lexicalist, construction-based tradition, which has sought to define a more lingistically transparent theory of meaning representation. Steedman offers a logical formalism that relates directly to the surface form of language and to the process of inference and proof that it must support. Such a natural logic, although formal by definition, should be allowed to grow organically from attested language phenomena rather than be axiomatized a priori in terms of any standard logic. Steedman also considers the application of natural semantic interpretations to practical natural language processing tasks, emphasizing throughout the elimination of traditional quantifiers from semantic formalism in favor of devices such as Skolem terms and structure-sharing among representations in processing.

This book is great for the first time rebuilder. It's filledwith detailed pictures and factory specifications. Doesn't get intohow to tune the engine or modify it. If you are not a novice I recommend something different.

Covers materials the new Conure owner needs....

I bought this book a while back when my granddaughter Rita became interested in Conures. I thought we were going to get a Conure for her, but we ended up buying a Cockatiel and Grandma got the Conure. I have four Cockatiels and they are the sweetest birds, so I thought the best pet for a child (Rita is a responsible 12-year old) might not be a Conure, as they are described as being somewhat vocal.

I discovered a Blue-Crested (Crowned) Conure in need of a home at my local bird store and became fascinated with him. Vinnie, as he is known, had been previously owned by an older woman who could no longer care for him. He is a sweet bird and he talks, so I having read Ms Watkins book decided to give it a whirl, and I brought him home. Now I can honestly say that a Conure can be as sweet as a Cockatiel. He makes some noises like a Crow, but I have three barking Poms, so he is mild in comparison (and he's learned to bark).

THE CONURE HANDBOOK by Anne Watkins has proved a goldmine for this impulsive bird owner. Watkins explains how to choose a new baby or do what I did, and look for an older Conure who exhibits good traits (including healthy). The idea that the only bird you can have is a newborn ain't necessarily so. Some older birds for sale or adoption have been put into care because their former owners simply could not take care of them anymore.

MY new Conure Vinnie is getting along well with my "shelter" Cockatiels, and I use Ms Watkins book to inform me about foods Vinnie can eat as well as other requirements. The book is filled with easy to read text and many photos of the various members of the Conure species. Based on my experience, I am thinking I may purchase more and different buddies.

This is a very informative book on conures that explains everything that you will ever need to know about conures - from what to feed - how to treat them - how to tame - how to teach them to talk. I would use these book over any other book. I ordered other books and wouldn't use any other. This is the book to use.

Great Book for Beginner Bird Owners!

I thought this book was great for all conure owners, or if you are considering a conure. The information given was on the basics like feeding, housing, illnesses; what to watch out for. Foods, do's and don'ts....DON'T feed your conure avocado, it will kill your bird! I wouldn't have known this if I didn't research. I highly recommend this book if you are considering owning any type of conure!

A teacher can give the book to an exceptional student who could read through it on her own whenever she's done early with the regular math lesson. Glenn Ellison is the Gregory K. Palm Professor of Economics at MIT. He is also the parent of three daughters and has spent many hours coaching middle school math teams and working with informal groups of younger and older kids in his kitchen classroom.

An excellent math enrichment book - highly recommended

I was lucky to have access to this book in manuscript form, and I used this book as basis of discussion for an after-school "Challenge Math" class at a local public elementary school. We had kids from grades 3 - 5.

I can not go far enough in complimenting the book. It introduces very challenging and interesting material in a fun way. What I like about the textbook is that it really expands the kids' understanding of what one can do with math. (It is not uncommon for kids to say "Wow" once they understood an especially cool concept). For example, one of my favorite chapters in the book is on "base 8" or how the number system would look like if we counted by eights instead of tens. The book refers to this as Bart Simpsons' world since the Simpson characters have four fingers only. This material is usually not covered in school curriculum. Introducing this to relatively young kids fulfills many functions: 1) it is pretty cool in a mind-blowing sort of way, 2) it forces kids to be flexible in their thinking, and 3) it makes them realize that math requires deep thinking and not just memorization. The fact that the author is able to explain this sort of material to young kids is amazing, but it really does work.

The textbook also comes with a workbook - Hard Math for Elementary School: Workbook - which has a bunch of challenging and fun problems. The problems are leveled -- the first few are relatively easy to do if the student understood the basic concept, but the problems get very challenging in the end. I would highly recommend the workbook. What I typically did was explain a small section of a chapter and then had the students do a worksheet.

I am so excited that this book is finally out! I have been recommending it to all my friends who have young children. It is really a very unique and wonderful book, which hopefully will lead to a lifetime of math enjoyment for kids. As a testament to this, I have to add that I learned a lot from reading the book as well, which I am sure will be the case for many parents and teachers as well.

My husband and I are professionals (engineer and attorney) and did not feel like our daughter was being challenged enough in math at school. She was tested for gifted, however, the teachers were still not supplementing her enough. She is currently in 3rd grade. We bought this series to work at home in addition to school work and it is EXCELLENT. She is very proud to show her friends her "Hard Math". Parents and teachers who have seen the textbook think it is too "hard", but that is exactly why we like it. We only spend 1 to 2 hours a week on the book and we are going at a nice pace. Highly recommend it if you want something more to work on with your kids.

Excellent book (minor tip that some parents might find helpful)

I bought this book for a second to third grader who wasn't being challenged enough by math at school. This book is excellent and covers topics that wouldn't be covered at school (either ever or until much later). I actually like the title, because it just challenges the kids and gives them real joy when they're able to figure it out while not disappointing them if they're not able to.

That has all been said by other reviewers but the reason why I felt compelled to write a review was my experience with the chapter on "base 8" arithmetic. I have some background in computer science and am very familiar with a binary system (base 2). I (and possibly the kid as well) absolutely loved the chapter - both from a mathematical as well as a sociological perspective (different people can talk and think differently based on their unique cultural experiences). However, there was one unintended consequence. The chapter uses Simpsons as an example of a society that might use a base 8. At which I felt obligated (encouraged by endless stream of "pleases") to introduce my kid to the Simpsons show. Not a wise parenting decision :-). I hadn't watched much of the show myself and even shows I watched before feel very different to me now as a parent. Simpsons is not an appropriate show for an 8 year old (or even a 10 year old for that matter). So, if you are in a similar situation I would recommend you to skip that chapter until the end of the book. Even from a complexity of concept perspective, I think it belongs much later in the book.

Having said that I must say that I truly am grateful for Glenn Ellison to have taken the time to put this book together. Chances are that any money he's making from this book is not commensurate with the value of his time. However, Glenn you do have a bunch of indebted parents.

After living and working in Moscow for three years, she edited The Art of the Russian Matryoshka, published by Vernissage Press. This is her first book for children. A First Rate Story with Caldecott Quality Illustrations

In this engaging story, the Snow Maiden's dilemma can be appreciated by all ages. At the point where the Snow Maiden makes a significant contribution to Santa's inventory, she gains self confidence and happiness. A perfect book for reading aloud over the Holidays! Children and adults will delight in exploring the plentiful illustrations.

Great Christmas Gift

I bought this book for my daughter who was adopted from Russia. It has wonderful, colorful illustrations. The story is very cute and it introduces some Russian words and cultural aspects. It does a good job of connecting Russia's Christmas customs to our Christmas customs. I know my daughter will love it when I give it to her for Christmas.

Beautiful and inspiring

This is a beautifully illustrated book about how a young Russian girl helps Santa Claus. It is a wonderful introduction to the variety of ways that Christmas is celebrated in other countries, but retains enough focus on the US to make it interesting to young Americans. My daughters love the book and I enjoy reading it to them as the story is interesting for both children and adults.
