About the Author
Dr. Frank Kreith is a Professor Emeritus in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Colorado in Boulder. He received his Ph.D. in Applied Science from the University of Paris in 1965. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), a Fellow and Honorary Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and recipient of the ASME Medal. The ASME International established "The Frank Kreith Energy Award" in 2005 in recognition of his contributions to the field of renewable energy and heat transfer. His areas of interest include heat transfer, thermal engineering, and solar engineering. He has been a consultant in the field of heat transfer engineering in many parts of the world.

YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO USE THIS BOOK!!

It is NOT stated anywhere that just because you can buy this book does not mean that you can USE this book. This book is a workbook that is meant to accompany the clinical textbook of the same name. It is a question and answer book that does NOT come with the answers. It states that the answers are avail. through an interactive learning website (evolve) but if you are NOT an instructor...you may NOT have access to the answers, rendering the book utterly useless for those who buy it for personal growth, or independent study. (For example if you are like me and need to study for the VTNE or state board exam but have already graduated vet tech school.)If you are not a vet tech student where this is required text, you are NOT going to be able to get access to the answers...rendering the book totally useless. This book is sold here, at barns and noble, web med and many other places..NO WHERE is it stated that this is the case until you OPEN the book and read the last sentence on the first page, then are led to the evolve website and 30 min later you find out you cannot be granted access to the answers if your not a teacher. I personally called several other distributers of this book that state falsely that the answers are provided and had them CHECK if they had a copy that indeed provided the answers. ALL THREE different places admitted that they had advertised it falsely and that the answers are in fact NOT available. BUYER BEWARE!!!
Shame too...this book is a DIRECT and fantastic companion to the 7th edition of the clinical textbook. I am very disappointed that I cannot use this would be great resource to study for the VTNE and state board exam. I am a vet tech grad (1999) that was using the 3rd edition. This book is ten times what the 3rd edition is. (referring to the clinical textbook not the workbook..workbooks were previousl unavailable.

Essential study tool

This workbook is a great study tool to use along with the main text book. Before I had it, reading and rereading the text was my method of learning the material, which quickly became boring. Doing the exercises in this workbook are a much more interesting way to study, and sometimes even point out some misinterpretations I had made.

I hate this book

I had to buy this book for school. It goes with a VERY large textbook that's a MAJOR pain. The sections in the main book go on forever. Then the workbook has just as much and goes on forever. I HATE doing cross word puzzles and in almost every chapter this book has them. We have found that the workbook has mistakes and the cross words are wrong and are missing numbers, or the words don't line up either. I didn't have a choice and had to get it for school, but if you are looking for something "extra" there are better things out there. They just came out with a new revision of this workbook and the main book. I just purchased them a year ago for school then had to pay AGAIN to buy them. The new workbook is the same. A lot of redundancy and those stupid crossword puzzles. Don't let them fool you either by touting they have "on-line" stuff to help you. It is not a lot and has very FEW things that can actually help you. I have a book from the Wiley-Blackwell publishing and Delmar Cengage Learning. Both of their website are GREAT! They actually give you most of the photos and power points on their websites you have access to. I use them to copy the pictures when I have memorize equipment, parasites, etc. It really helps.

Great book on market mispricings

I never thought I would see a book on the stock market that is believable, yet useful. Malkiel's book on Random Walk is accurate but according to that you can't do anything. Singal's book is aptly titled "Beyond the Random Walk". He seems to believe in market efficiency but says that there are times when the market or a few stocks are not correctly priced.
The book talks about these mispricings in a refreshingly simple language though it relies on amazing amount of research. Also has trading strategies that are useful.
I would recommend it.

Detailed and Useful Trading Strategies....

The financial markets give investors a chance to make money when they work - and when they don't. When markets work efficiently they uncover the true value of an asset by pegging its fair price for informed buyers and sellers. When for a variety of reasons markets are inefficient they misprice assets. When the specific circumstances of that mispricing are recognized and persistent (viz. predictable) it is an anomaly. The regularity of anomalies offers investors, at least in theory, the opportunity to profit by taking a position that recognizes the temporary nature of the mispricing before it rights itself. These anomalies are the subject of Singal's study which takes its title from the updated 1970's classic exposition of the efficient market hypothesis by Princeton Economics professor Burton Malkiel.
This is a detailed look at ten market anomalies. Singal's goal is to move us well beyond descriptions and academic evidence and offer trading strategies intended to achieve an outsized market return. Each chapter summarizes key points and projects potential returns from implementing the outlined strategy. Additional market anomalies are briefly identified in the final chapter. As a bonus of sorts an appendix gives the most detailed explanation of short selling I have read.
From a practical standpoint some anomalous situations would appear to be more exploitable than others. Mergers between public companies occur with some frequency, so an understanding of how to play the merger premium paid by acquiring companies for their target is useful. Changes to the composition of the S&P 500 Index and their impact on stock prices occur with less frequency, but this is balanced by opportunities from the January and "New December Effect" (mark your calendars). From anecdotal observations, I am not convinced by the author's discussion of the Weekend Effect, and the chapter on International Investing seems like a fair argument for diversification rather than an anomaly. The so-called Value Line Enigma identified in the final chapter is perplexing to this reader, since the supposed outperformance of their recommended stocks runs directly counter to a similar study of mutual funds picked by Morningstar. An apples to oranges comparison to some, perhaps, but it is a sufficiently known study to warrant comment. A chapter dealing with currency forward rates will be beyond most non-professional investors. I would have liked to have heard more about spin-offs, the long-term overperformance of "independent" subsidiaries occasionally distributed to shareholders of a parent company. Singal identifies the simpler, "sharper" corporate mission as the reason. Actually, it may be strong sponsorship and generous, upfront management incentives which spark those returns.
The question remains, does this serious academic study offer practical trading strategies to investors bent on gain. The answer is that Singal has so many ideas packed into the book that investors will be influenced in the aggregate in their trading decisions. Not to be aware of these market biases exposes traders to more uncertainty and risk than may be necessary.

Something for investors

I was looking for information on timing mutual funds and stumbled on the site of this book: [...] I was so intrigued by the book that I ordered it. Not a bad book at all. It explained everything I wanted to know about mispricing of mutual fund NAVs in a very simple language. Amazing that these people (Singal and others) have known about it for almost 10 years -- and investors like me did not know. This is just one chapter in the book. There are ten anomalies he discusses. Worth a lot more than the $30 I paid for it.

Hot Superhero Fiction

I'm kind of surprised by the one star review. I liked this story a lot, especially the idea of the shift in reality (always a favorite theme for me). It was hot, a good read, and I thought the character development was fine for what this is. Then again, I have enjoyed all of this authors stories, so maybe I'm not the best judge. Still, I recommend it enthusiastically!

this is an excellent superhero take-down fantasy

Wow, this is an excellent superhero take-down fantasy. The villain takes him down by degrees, and the hero ineffectually resists and tries to argue as his downfall develops and intensifies, which I always find sexy. There's also a nice twist about halfway through, which gives some more varied scenes of erotic humiliation. Well-done!

Calming

For all the people of the earth, the Creator has planted a sacred Tree, under which they may gather to find healing, power, wisdom and security. Its roots spread deeply into Mother Earth, its branches reach to Father Sky. Its fruits are the good things that our Creator has given to all peoples, the path to love, compassion, generosity, patience, wisdom, justice, courage, respect, humility and other great gifts.

The life of the Tree rests with life of the people, but if they forget to take its nourishment, many would grow sick at heart, lie, quarrel, and abuse the land, poisoning everything they touch. The people would be as in sleep, to awaken again to their search for the Tree, whose knowledge rests with the elders. I find this an especially calming and beautiful book for these terrible times.

Enduring Classic

This quiet sleeper is more than just a supplementary tool for Native American rites of passage programs. This is a bondafide spiritual growth tool which is suitable for youth and adults. I have seen few books that are written in such easy to read language but truly FULL of information.

This book will cause introspection and it will give a wonderful roadmap for those that are courageous enough to take the journey. I recommend this book to peoples of all colors. The Native American Sacred Tree and Medicine Wheel applications in this book are incredibly useful.
