Great Addition for Spanish Students in High School

This is a wonderful novel for Spanish I or II students in High School. I could even use it with 7th and 8th graders, I believe. We use it during the summer to keep their Spanish abilities active, and also to build confidence and comprehension. This book does many things for a student: 1) builds vocabulary 2) improves comprehension level 3) motivates students to find out "what happens" 4) provides a new way to increase Spanish knowledge.

As a teacher of ages 3 to 18 year olds, I use excerpts from these books here and there, and use them for a Summer Spanish reading program each summer. Great idea and execution!

I learned that Betsey Ross had quite a few children, that she met George Washington, and that she was a widow many times". The 10 year old LACHNES MONSTER bought this book with his birthday money, and could not wait for it to arrive, when it finally arrived, it did not disappoint! Excellent read, perfect for the 10 year old age range, and perfect for young history buffs. Great illustrations and time lines, for interactive learning.

When i first picked up this book I had my doubts. The cover is unassuming, and let's face it, the idea of the life of a hermit seems boring at first thought.

This is not only a story about Father Zosima, but also about His Father and Brother, the fearless Father Basilisk. They lived in harsh climate of the siberian desert, and braved almost certain death in the search for the salvation of their souls in Holy Silence away from the world of men.

St. Zosima brought many to the Lord and even risked his life to establish a convent. Reading this book on several occasions i leapt for joy, shouted "Yes!" or "No!" throwing my arms in the air, and wept. It was too much for me to try to read this book all at once, because it was emotionally exhausting!

This book is not a five it's a gazillion! But I guess I'm limited to five stars.

The Desert of Russia

Paints a very inspiring picutre of Elder Zosima as a humble, gentle and compassionate man. I was hoping there would be more about Zosima's spiritual practice and how he grew. That being said, I certainly enjoyed the book enough to want to read the rest of the "acquisition of the Holy Spirit in Russia" series.

I'm sorry to say I found this book somewhat dry and formulaic. I was hoping for more... I recently read the biographies of Fr. Seraphim Rose and Fr. Arseny which were excellent... but Elder Zosima's bio left much to be desired. Its hard to point out what was wrong with it, except to repeat that its dry reading.
