A different optical illusions book

Over the last decade or so there have been dozens and dozens of books and games which focus on optical illusions. I should know. I have written two books on the subject; produced two board games which are based on illusions; and, published six decks of playing cards each containing 55 different illusion images. Virtually all of the existing materials using illusions are basically collections of images. The text which accompanies them is usually descriptive intending to make the illusory effect more readily available to the reader assuming it is not readily apparent. They help the reader "see" the illusion. This book is "different." The author takes us into each image using a step by step easy to follow conversational tone which not only makes the illusory aspect of the image clear, but importantly and differently, makes us not only "see" the effect but understand "how" it was achieved! He then encourages the reader to go ahead and create his or her own special images. It is very well done.

Illusion drawing secrets revealed like never before!

As a published digital photo artist specializing in "Illusion Fusion", I am a big fan of optical illusions and have been purchasing books and calendars on the subject for many years from authors like Block, Seckel and now Ausbourne. Because optical illusions are compelling and entertaining in their own rite, most books on the subject (and there are a lot) tend to fall into two categories - creative picture/story books, or scientific explanations of how the mind's eye works. Ausbourne, a graphic artist himself, and publisher of arguably the first and longest running science web site on optical illusions, has taken a more unique approach with his first book. As the title suggests, this book shows how to understand and draw illusions from someone who has been creating illusion art for almost two decades. The book's illusions are beautifully rendered and printed in full color throughout the thirty-seven enlightening and easy to follow workshop projects. By dissecting the world's most popular illusions into their basic forms, Ausbourne was able to definitely explain the steps for creating my own illusions using a variety of media. I see these projects being a valuable source of inspiration for my own illusion creations for years to come. I give this book my highest illusion rating: Three thumbs up.

A fun way to understand how visual illusions work

I find optical illusions a fascinating subject, and this book plays right into my curiosity! In this book, there are examples of all types of visual illusions - impossible objects, distortion illusions, ambiguous illusions, and the like. What makes this book so great is the way the illusions are explained and the invitation to play with them to see how they work. Even when I demonstrated for myself how these illusions work using the easy hands-on projects in the book, I found it impossible to convince my eyes that they were being tricked! I found project after project in the book to be captivating and intriguing. This book is both informative and lots of fun! If you're interested in optical illusions, how your mind can be tricked, or just like to see how some puzzles work, this book will give you hours of satisfaction.

Many such co-design systems have been described so far (references can be found in this book), but many of these are based on heuristics. In this book, Niemann describes a co-design system which is based on sound modeling techniques. This system has the following salient features: • Precise cost and performance figures Design decisions for implementing a certain function in hardware or software are based on 'cost and performance figures for the different design alterna­ tives. Hence, good designs can only be expected if these figures are accurate. In order to achieve excellent accuracy, Niemann takes a new approach: the cost of software implementations is derived from the data available about the target processors and from knowledge about the code size. the performance of software implement at ions is computed by compiling the given function and then using static analysis for computing worst case execution times. the cost of hardware implementation is estimated by running higher-Ievel synthesis tools. the performance of hardware implementations is again computed by us­ ing static analysis.

Follow this advice

I read this book and it explained why the 8 Hour Diet didn't work. It didn't work for me. This book refers you to a book by Pilon and his form of fasting has worked the best for me. Easy to follow and easy to adopt as a lifestyle change. It is the first "diet" plan that I can actually continue for the rest of my life. I don't feel deprived and I continue to lose weight at a steady pace.

I would never have know about Pilon's book if it wasn't for this book. I owe a great debt of thanks to Girard for challenging the 8 Hour Diet's misuse of the research and setting the research on fasting straight.

Read it - then follow his advice.

Oversimplification

Saved me some cash...

I was going to purchase the 8 hour diet and decided to borrow this book first. I do believe that giving the public the idea that you can eat whatever you want for eight hours and lose weight is a marketing ploy. I think this author brings you back to the basic fact that there are no free rides. The 8 hour diet may work if you make sure you make healthy choices.

I loved this book, it covers the essentials of obstetric ultrasound in a very practical way. It is also very well illustrated, and it's so little that you can carry it easily in your pocket. A must have for every beginner in the field.

At adolescence, the girl is "rescued" by the Coast Guard and turned over to a scientist who has a government grant to study the part language acquisition plays in socialization. Mila, the otherworldly "dolphin girl," is enthusiastic to please, learning to speak words and write her thoughts on a computer, but gradually she understands that she is a prisoner "in the net of humans." She begins to lose ground, regressing physically, begging to be returned to the sea. Hesse's skill is in making readers believe in this wise, intuitive feral child. Mila's longing for the sea and her dolphin family is so achingly palpable that her return is equally believable. Her story is told in her own perfectly sustained voice: the clear and simple, but profound and poetic language of a "foreigner" with a keen mind and resonant spirit but limited vocabulary. Gr. 4^-7. It was no ordinary rescue for the Coast Guard: the girl preferred to stay unrescued, running away with movements more animal than human. The young teen, called Mila for miracle, and thought lost at sea years earlier, was raised by dolphins until her discovery. Now she begins her acculturation back into the world of humans, and the scene shifts to a special school-hospital in Boston, where doctors study and observe their fascinating find. Mila tells the story, speaking in simple, halting prose in the opening chapters as befits her own feelings of strangeness in a radically new environment. A quick study, she rapidly figures out human civilization and makes great strides in language and music. Being human disappoints her, however, and she feels longingly that "I have been coming back to the sea from the moment I left it." Return she does, though in a somewhat unconvincing reunion with her sea family at the end. The book works largely because of Mila's sharp observations, the stranger-in-a-strange-and scenario, and the incredible notion of the dolphin family, all of which will interest elementary and middle-school readers. To each his own...

This work of fiction was purchased as a requirement for a public school assignment. It tells of a girl that is found on a deserted island, that has been "raised" by dolphins. Her rescuers unsuccessfully attempt to assimilate her into human society; only to fail, give up, and send her back to the island to live with the dolphins (spoiler alert).

Pros+ The printing was sharp and clear, and the pages were evenly cut and well bound.

Cons- The contents were lacking. My teenage son found this story and its conclusion to be almost as ridiculous, as I found his requirement to read it.

One star, since the printer did his job well.
Nothing against fiction; but a history book would have been a much better use of his mind. Save your money, and find a good read elsewhere.

About the Author
Rob Sylvan started contributing photos to iStockphoto in 2002. In December 2002, he became the sixth photo inspector (the people who review all new submissions to the site) to be hired. Over the last seven years he has inspected thousands upon thousands of photos and is in the process of re-writing iStock's photo contributor manual. Beyond his experience with iStockphoto, Rob has been one of three people serving on the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) Help Desk answering Photoshop and Lightroom questions for all NAPP members. 100 % Success!

I recently purchased Rob Sylvan's book. His explanations of the cause of stock photo rejections was very clear and useful, and helped me make sense of the boilerplate rejection responses that so far, far outnumber my acceptances. Utilizing 3 separate pieces of information gleaned from the book, I was able to turn my latest 3 rejections into acceptances. More than just the euphoria of this sudden success is the hope that I can now plan more ambitous photos, without the despair of feeling doomed from the start. "Taking Stock"... a great book!

I just finished the book "Taking Stock: Make money in microstock creating photos that sell" by Rob Sylva and it's coming to you with a two thumbs up recommendation (if I had more thumbs it would get them too).

Rob comes at the subject of stock photography from both sides of the fence, he is a stock photographer AND an image inspector for iStock Photo.

This book is well written, it has a ton of images that help demonstrate and reinforce what he has to say, and is very easy to follow and understand.

One of the things I really like about the book as the inclusion of the images from other stock photographers, including their thoughts and ideas behind that image, and their advice to those considering entering the field of stock photography.

Some of the chapters are:

* Tools of the Trade

* Shooting Tips From the Pros

* Digital Darkroom

* Digital Editing

And these incredibly important topics:

* Avoiding Rejection

* Seeing Like an Inspector

These two chapters alone are worth the price of admission and who would know better than an image inspector?

Rob asks a simple (but powerful) question, "are you working inside the sweet spot of your equipment?". Great question. Why ask your gear to do something it was not designed for, know your limitations and work within them.

He also provides a download link to a group of his own images that he rejected and includes text explaining the reason for their rejection, a great learning tool.

And he wraps up the book discussing the importance and the "how to" of meta data, titles, descriptions, and keywording. It doesn't matter how good your images are if a potential client can't find them while searching.

Oh, one last thing... MONEY.

How much money can be made in stock? Take a look at the Christmas tree on cover of his book, it is a tree in Rob's yard that as of the books printing has made him over $13,000.

I am not suggesting you stop shooting portraits, weddings, or whatever your photographic specialty is, or that you will retire from one stock image, what I am suggesting is that what you will learn from "Taking Stock" will help you refine your eye to make the images you are already shooting attractive to those who purchase stock and might just add some jingly in your pocket.

This book is a great introduction to creating stock images. Sylvan takes the reader step by step through all the necessary ideas and information needed to get started in stock photography. He talks about the pros and cons in a realistic way without at all discouraging the newcomer.

Throughout each chapter there are activities to help the reader develop skills needed to gain perspective and insight to creating images suitable. He starts with using an organized way to look at existing stock images, evaluate them and then begin to look at the world with the notion of seeing potential stock images.

References are made to Sylvan's preferred online stock image providers. There is discussion about their methods and requirements for selecting stock images to post from those submitted. Sylvan is realistic without being discouraging. The book is replete with samples of successful images along with comments by the creator.

Sylvan is a capable instructor and provides the reader with all the tools necessary to submit their own stock images. This book is not only a great introduction to get the interested reader started but a reference guide to keep handy along the journey through stock image creation.

About the Author
Stanley J. Tambiah is the Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University. He received his PhD from Cornell University in 1954. He joined the faculty at the University of Cambridge, where he taught for ten years, and was a Fellow of King's College. He went to the University of Chicago in 1973, and moved to Harvard Univesity in 1976. He began field work in Sri Lanka (1956-59), the island of his birth, and and later worked in Thailand. He is the author of eight books.

It is a very good read.

A fascinating account of the life and contribution that Leach made in his notable and often extraordinary career as a social anthropologist. His close friend Stanley Tambiah has done a splendid job of providing us with an insight into his personal and academic life during his wartime service and experiences in Burma, which contributed to his becoming a committed anthropologist. It is a very good read.

Read and reviewed at Ellora's Cave

I had some HUGE issues with the novel.

The political story line is annoying as hell, and any mention of America or the MC's past takes you completely out of the novel. Her family is COMPLETELY unrealistic. The writer clearly has no knowledge of spy training or warfare other than maybe what she's seen on TV or in films - but I'd say she didn't even pay too close attention there. My main frustration here was how "BRILLIANT" of a spy the SS seemed to find her because she "IMPROVISES". Despite how the author seems to think that spies improvising is completely unheard of, spies improvise all the time.

Another thing that irked me was her mentioning seduction training a million times and then knowing absolute ZILCH when it came to sex: thinking that the man in the missionary position is suppose to squish the female & that she hurt her captor when she touched his erection. The writing could have used some heavy handed editing. So many descriptions were used repeatedly it kind of takes you out of the book. About a million "Actually" "Too be honest" "Honestly" etc over and over again.

ALL of that being said, if you can grit your teeth and move past the more annoying things, there is a nice chemistry between the two characters. I think the sex scenes - while not really well written & tended to skip over her climaxes again and again - had promises to them and delivered on those promises pretty well.

I might have wanted to toss the book a few times (didn't because it's on my ereader) but there was something there in the author's story or writing that kept me reading. I blame the lack of editing here more than the author. Any editor worth their salt should have told the writer we don't need descriptions of taking a shower unless something happens (and 3 or 4 pages of nothing but a catalog of item bought for her?? HOW DID AN EDITOR LET THIS PASS) but still... Could have been MUCH better. Either way it's MUCH easier to critique than it is to create, so I hope Gail S. keeps writing and improving on her craft.

Interesting premise, poor execution

I was drawn to this book by its interesting premise: Nazi Germany did not fall after the death of Hitler, and instead went on to form an empire stretching across Europe. This Nazi Empire is still in existence today, and is at odds with contemporary America.

Isabel, an American spy, is captured behind enemy lines outside of Berlin, and to her horror she is taken into the custody of an S.S. officer - one of the most feared officials in the Empire.

I was well prepared to enjoy an escapist "Stockholm Syndrome"-esque fantasy that involved some kinky bondage sex, but the taboo heat promised by the book's cover was never delivered. The S.S. officer is much too sweet to fulfill the role of Dom, and honestly the kinkiest thing he does is handcuff Isabel to the bed. The sex is incredibly repetitive (here's a hint, he makes her come over and over and over...). In fact, I'm pretty sure they only have sex in two positions the entire book. What little BDSM that happens in the book largely takes place "off screen", and the heroine (who claims in her internal monologue to be interested in being sexually submissive) freaks out every time the S.S. officer does anything remotely domineering. I suppose it's realistic for their to be a "breaking in" period, but I guess I expected the book to develop their Dom/sub relationship a little more before its abrupt ending.

In addition to my disappointment with the actual sex, the story goes nowhere very, very slowly. The beginning is fast paced with her capture, his interrogation, and his decision to keep her as his captive a little longer. But as soon as they get back to his house it becomes painfully stagnant. Are we really expected to believe that for MONTHS they perform the same routine (of lots of vanilla sex) every day without any outside interruption? There was no conflict in the story aside from the heroine's own hang-ups, which became boring exactly a third of the way through the book. I really, really would have loved to see some external conflict that puts their new relationship in jeopardy.

All that said, I am giving this book two stars for effort. The writing is grammatical and competent, if a little unmemorable. Like I said, I loved the original premise, and I have to admit that the first half of the book was a real page-turner -- I just wish the author hadn't fizzled out towards the end.
