Great book for students!

I am a Doctor of Pharmacy student currently on my Infectious Diseases rotation in the final year of my curriculum. I loved the idea of this book and purchased it through the Nerdcore Medical kickstarter as soon as I discovered it. Infectious Disease diagnosis, pathology, and pharmacotherapy is a fascinating field that is often challenging for many students. I am not really into fantasy gaming and stories, but this book is dense with accurate information and it's styling definitely helped me as a mnemonic to build my memorization of antibiotic spectra and coverage. This book and the other games and products from Nerdcore Medical were definitely more helpful to me as a memory aid than the other comparables I have tried like SketchyMicro, Made Ridiculously Simple series, etc. In summary, I love this book!

If this were one of a series (and I wish it were), I'd buy the whole series right now.

I'm a DVM, not an MD, and I've never been into fantasy gaming but I love this book more than words can describe. The illustrations are beautiful, and the concepts and descriptions are so clever that I get at least one delighted giggle from each page. I've also learned some really interesting new facts, such as the story of Balto the sled-dog (I am a veterinarian after all;), which I looked up after being intrigued by the reference to him in the description of C. diphtheriae. This book would make a wonderful and unique gift for anyone in the medical sciences. I just bought another copy as a gift for my boss.

Grabs you and holds you tight!

Hi, and firstly my thanks to the author, whom I wouldn't have been in touch with had I not been signed up with Goodreads.

When I first started to read this book, I didn't think I would like it, that it wasn't really my thing, I have to admit. But within about the first 80 pages it had been gripped. I love the way it flitted between the present and how he had got to that point. The author really seemed to understand the plight of the main character, and how he felt as the story unfolded. If he (the author) hasn't ever been a pickpocket, then his research is amazingy lol! It was very real to me and I could imagine how the mc felt, going back to his van alone and hoping no one would find him, especially Lilith! I'll not let on what happened but the whole Gabriel episode, well, it's heart breaking!

You could feel terror, fear, his cockiness and loneliness, as the story unfolded. Although he knew his craft (mc) you could also feel his spinning out of control as events piled up and some overtook him. I got to about 2/3 of the way through and was convinced I knew who the villain was and how it was going to finish, although I still wanted to read the ending! But then when I got to the end, not only was I wrong but I was SOOOO wrong! And I could see how I was wrong too!

A really good story, I really enjoyed it. I do love a book which surprises me, both by turning out to be a great tale and really well written, and in that I don't get the ending early!

Thanks again Martyn, for allowing me to read it, and I'm off to Amazon now to see what else you have to offer!!

Having read and enjoyed the authors other works (The Amsterdam Assassin Series) I was keen to read his other works.

This story focuses on a character who has previously featured in the AA series, Wolfgang the pickpocket. The story begins with Wolfgang having been seen by an aspiring student of his craft and we are then taken on an roller coaster of a ride.

At 220 pages it is a shorter read than the full length Katla novels but the story is every bit as engaging. The author has a skill for making characters who should be unlike able seem the opposite and you do manage to see Wolf and his faults and think of him as not so bad and like everyone else trying to live a quiet life and make a living (sadly at other peoples expense).

Wolf wants to move abroad but he is manipulated into training the wannabe apprentice Lilith and finds himself chasing bigger deals and opportunities that present themselves to him. It is rather difficult to say much more than this about the plot without putting in spoilers.

Fans of the AA series will enjoy this with the story being set in the same world and some characters are involved in this story. I thoroughly enjoyed this story it does lack the character depth that the AA series has developed but given this is a standalone story this does not really detract from the story.

I loved the fact that it's about a pickpocket

Yes, that's right, I'm giving this a 5-star review!
First of all, I loved the fact that it's about a pickpocket. I'll read anything with a criminal as the protagonist, so that hooked me right off the bat.
The author gets into a lot of details about Amsterdam (the city that serves as the setting for the story), and it helps to fix an image of the world around you into your mind. He gives plenty of details to help you understand what life in Amsterdam for his character is like, but without giving info dumps or going into too many random details.
The characters were all surprisingly well-written for such a short story! They were layered, developed, complex, and intriguing, even the ones that only appeared in a few scenes.
The plot itself was quite brilliant, I must admit. Despite the character's cynicism and wariness, he ends up being played incredibly cleverly by the Lilith character. It's a beautiful example of just how easily men can be manipulated by women.
Throughout the book, the author uses flash-forward scenes to describe the end of the book, letting you know over and over that the character got "played". And yet, you have no idea how he gets played right up until the moment that it happens. There is nothing to give away the ending, which I found incredibly clever and well-written. All in all, it's worth the 5 stars, and it's a book I will gladly recommend to anyone!

Probst, a clinical social worker and educator, argues that our society has become too quick to diagnose and label children who think or act outside the box as having a psychiatric disorder or disease. Although there are times when a diagnosis and medication are called for, Probst believes that the diagnosis explosion is over the top (adding up the medical statistics, she concludes that 44 percent of all American children are pathologically depressed, anxious, defiant or hyperactive). Probst presents fresh tactics for dealing with difficult children, using temperament as a basis for understanding and intervention. Guiding parents through a temperament questionnaire, she maps 11 core traits, including energy source, attention and sensory sensitivity. She then offers practical strategies and tools parents can use when a child's social or physical environment clashes with his temperament (for instance, a simple timer can help a child who has problems with transitions; discussing a backup plan may help a child who has trouble adapting to unexpected situations.) The author encourages parents to reframe their own thinking and focus on their child's strengths (i.e., a label such as antisocial can be seen as self-sufficient, or hyper as lively). Eleven temperament scales and your child

This book gives a parent more context for what they are being told (or have noticed themselves) about their child, especially if that child is having difficulties. The setting and pressures may have everything to do with the way the child responds in a given situation.

With this book, parents evaluate the child and themselves (the better to understand sources of conflict and hidden expectations).

I thought the most valuable chapters were Chapter 8 - the BIG FIVE areas of conflict and how to manage them; Chapter 9 - teaching parents how to help, when to step in, and when to stand back; and Chapter 12 - keeping a strangths perspective as a parent..

Parents are encouraged to think about what their child does well, to value what makes your child different, and to hold off from diagnosing children with psychological disorders.

One great piece of advice from this book: If it feels like you're going around and around in circles with your child, you are the PARENT! Jump off the treadmill.

I can't explain how comforted I have been to find this book. Barbara Probst seems to "get" children like my son - a bright, emotionally intense, often hyper, wonderful child who is not responsive to standard age-appropriate parenting, but who is not necessarily in need of a formal diagnosis. I have a young child who in many ways thinks, acts, and challenges like a teenager. Before I came across this book, I entered countless cycles of searching for advice about particular behaviors, looking for something better than my own instincts and strategies (which I felt were exhausted and ineffective) and finding nothing that fit. Everything I found was either too mainstream, leaving me saying, "Okay, sure, of course, and what do I do when THAT doesn't work . . .?" or it left me with a checklist toward a diagnosis that ultimately didn't fit either.

Yet Ms. Probst described the exact type of behaviors I was used to, and better yet, she understood them. She also is clear in helping the reader to understand his/her own temperment and how it is similar or different to the child's. For example, armed with this "aha" I became more in tune to the specific stress in my child's environment, such as how his perfectionism and tempo differ from the family members that spend the most time with him. Ms. Probst's analysis of how behaviors may relate to a mismatch between temperment and environment has made a significant difference in our world.

I have re-read this book more than a few times because I find that reading it again refreshes my perspective and understanding. I continue to be so grateful for finding this resource, and I highly recommend it to other parents.
