I read this book some years ago,and found it so fascinating to be living in the village, where most of the content of this story lies,along side of the river Severn in Gloucestershire UK. It is still a very rural area, and as in the days this was written, village life mainly revolves around the church and the pub, and as only about approximately 90 people live here, it is a very close community.

It is cracking read, down to earth in its narrative, and so true to life in those days.

I am so pleased to now own a copy of my own.

Greer enters a new school with the hopes of reinventing herself from the wallflower with one friend to speak of, to a social butterfly. She soon finds herself among the company of athletes, a swimmer herself. While Greer tries to get comfortable in her clique under the admiring eye of Cameron Keeting, the most attractive jock in school, she becomes increasingly interested in someone else. Rebecca Wilder, the beautiful swim team captain and infamous lesbian in town, befriends Greer, taking her under her wing. A love triangle soon overtakes Greer's world, leading to drug experimentation and mental confusion as she comes to grips with her sexuality as her world starts to fall apart. Without anyone to turn to, Greer must find an inner strength and the courage to be herself in a society that doesn't always understand.

About the Author
A.J. Walkley has a background in journalism, film studies and creative writing. She served as a health volunteer in the U.S. Peace Corps in Malawi, Africa, after graduating from Dickinson College in Pennsylvania in 2007. She won the Barnes and Noble Rising Star Award for her self-published book Choice in 2009. Originally from Connecticut, Walkley currently resides in Phoenix, AZ, where she is working on her third novel, Vuto, inspired by her experiences in Africa.

Excellent read from the start

A.J. Walkley's story telling ability is apparent from the start of this great read. She tells a compelling story about Greer McManus and her trials and tribulations with her sexual identity during her high school days. First she becomes involved with Cameron, a handsome and fun-loving jock, and at the same time she meets Rebecca the star athelete on her swim team. The story of Greer's high school days, interactions with teachers, her swim coach, and pot parties with friends are funny and realistic depictions of high school life. I could relate to Greer's falling in love for the first time with a woman, when it was the last thing she expected to happen to her in her new high school setting. And as happens with most first love stories, there is the heart-wrenching break-up. The story line also includes Greer's best friend Nick from her hometown back in South Carolina, who is always there for Greer in her times of need, even when she surprises him with her revelation that she is gay. I would recommend this novel to anyone interested in reading about the difficulties young people face when questioning their sexual identity. Deborah(age 54)

A Colloquial Expression of A Radiant Inner Self

'Queer Greer,' as presented by Walkley, is an eloquent colloquial centering on Greer, our protagonist, who struggles to identify herself as both a woman and, ultimately, a bi-sexual woman in Arizona. Walkley surrounds Greer with creative personas, all of whom uniquely affect Greer in her quest to define herself. When Greer ultimately realizes her strange feelings towards a close friend are in actuality definitive and others understand as well as welcome them, she starts to step into the shoes that are initially prescribed by Walkley from the onset of the novel. A.J. Walkley effectively illustrates how such an impressive woman can retain her individuality and social graces while remaining in a social circumstance that ostracizes the LGBT community. The novel clearly addresses several youth-oriented issues surrounding coming-out in high school and identifying oneself as part of the LGBT community.

It's about time!

"Queer Greer" is the first book I have read to cover so many of the pressing issues faced by young people in or entering into the LGBT community. Walkley gives a profound insight into how difficult the self-realization process of coming out can be, especially in a difficult period such as high school. Walkely perfectly captures the ups and downs of this process, while maintaining the importance of being true to one's self. I would absolutely recommend this book for anyone who has experienced firsthand the coming out process or who knows someone going through it.

Kunzendorf's second chapter presents evidence that the most primitive sensation-pain, the subjective aspect of free nerve endings or nociceptors-has a survival-promoting function. But as the pressure nociceptor mutates into a touch receptor, the heat nociceptor into temperature receptor, and the chemical nociceptor into a taste receptor, the painful qualia of these nociceptors evolve respectively into touch sensation, temperature sensation, or taste sensation-painless sensations that add no survival benefit to their receptor's physical aspect. Building on evidence that retinal receptors embodying visual qualia evolved from primitive eyespots responsive to injurious 'heat at a distance' or painful light, the third chapter presents evidence that visually imagined sensations are the subjective qualities of retinal receptors that are corticofugally innervated in warm-blooded animals-for the developmental purpose of testing cortically hypothesized sensory-motor rules that have greater survival value than cold-blooded stimulus-response associations. The fourth and final chapter focuses on self-conscious reality-testing and on visuo-spatial self-conceptualization, and presents evidence that such manifestations of self-awareness evolve only in those warm-blooded animals whose rule-developing youth lasts two years or longer-that is, those mammals and birds whose survival during the imaginal testing of rules is subjected to prolonged risk if self-consciousness that one is imaging sensations (rather than perceiving sensations) is absent.

No Code Included

The Kindle Fire version of this textbook is generally easy to use and I am mostly happy with it. It is so much handier to have an EBook version than lugging around a bulky print book that it makes up for the few faults I have encountered. I wish it came with standard Kindle functionality but this is not the case. I have vision problems so the ability to re-size the font would be nice. You can expand/contract the image size with finger pinching movements but have to do so on each page, and having to scroll around the expanded page in order to see all of the text gets a bit old. On the plus side, you can make notes and bookmarks, and the text is searchable. I expect that if Amazon could have included Kindle functions, they would have.

I have one complaint that Amazon CAN address. The product description does not make it clear that a WileyPlus access code is NOT included in the price. If you are taking an on-line class this code will have to be purchased separately. For price shoppers out there, this is critical information and should be included in the description. This is true of any text book which would normally have an access code, not just this particular book.

Use with caution

This little book written to provide insight into the myriad of Pynchon's obscure references and symbolic appellations in The Crying of Lot 49 is a worthwhile source of help if used with discretion and common sense. Although many of Grant's entries are useful to untangle some of Pynchon's more obscure references, others will simply lead you further down the path of confusion. The problem lies in the fact that while many of Grant's suggestions are useful, others simply bring about the same type of confusion that he is trying to address, since he often gives more than one possible explanation for each passage discussed. That is not to say that the book is not useful, it is, only that The Crying of Lot 49 by its very nature resists such means of explanation. But as reader of Pynchon already know, any help is welcome. As long as the reader keeps in mind that this book is meant only to introduce "possible meanings" and "complimentary facts", which may or may not correspond to what Pynchon actually has hidden in his words. Nonetheless a good source of info and a help to anyone exasperated by the twisting and turning of Pynchon's view of the postmodern world.

Not for a first-time reader, but good for the next

I would strongly encourage peopling reading The Crying of Lot 49 for the first time to NOT use this Companion. At best, it will only confuse because Grant clearly assumes that his readers are already familiar with the novel - odd but true is the fact that you need to have read the novel in order to understand the Companion! At worst, the Companion could ruin the experience of this wonderful novel since Grant freely discusses events from the end of the book early on in the Companion. This spoils the natural flow and discovery process.

Having said that, I used the Companion during my second reading of this novel and found it to be interesting and quite helpful in getting more out of the novel. Personally, I get the impression that the Companion is targeted for someone (like Grant) who teaches literature courses - it's jam packed with the kind of speculation, interpretation, and analysis that some people (often professors) love while others (often students) find distracting or pointless. For my tastes it goes overboard fairly often - a bloated discussion of the significance of a Tupperware party is but one of many possible examples. But that's OK since it's easy to skim or skip sections that aren't of interest.

I feel fortunate that I did not have the Companion when I first read The Crying of Lot 49, but equally fortunate that I did have it my second time through. Hey, learning the origin of the name Bloody Chiclitz is worth the price of the book alone.

I conduct the Berkeley Pynchon reading-group, Berkeley Pynheads. I can say, without reservation, that Kerry's book is absolutely essential for gaining access to The Crying of Lot 49. As a bonus, it is an endlessly fascinating read in itself. It is like an encyclopedia of American arcana. Buy it.

Pretty Good

I was a little disappointed in this book. The first three in the series transitioned easily, sewing up loose ends. I actually thought I had jumped ahead a book when I started reading it. So many things unresolved in the last book remained unresolved in this one. It just didn't flow as easily. Still a good read though.

So, I expected this to be a direct continuation of the story from the first books in the series and it isn't. Still good, and the same characters are in the story, they just aren't the main characters as they were in the first 3 books.

Rose Hill has my favorite small town characters.

The characters of Rose Hill are fast becoming my favorite characters. This is the fourth book in the series and it continues the story of the families who grew up in Rose Hill. Scott Campbell is the sheriff of the small town and has only two deputies to help him. Carrie Fitzpatrick returns to Rose Hill after 20 years in the Hollywood scene and plans to stay just long enough to get her parents settled, then she will leave again. It is a poignant story about the children of aging parents and how they will react to disabling disease, dementia, and frail health of their parents. There is a hit and run that needs to be solved and Carrie's former boss has come to Rose Hill to bully her into returning to work. All in all it is just another day in Rose Hill. I highly recommend ti.
