Her uncle, Manolo, spiritually teaches her that identity isn't based on superficial and external definitions, but rather is an essence that she has had all along in her heart. Longest-running off-Broadway Latinx play - required reading!

This is the classic play by award-winning playwright Carmen Rivera. If you are interested in Latinx literature, this is an important text to have on your shelf. It is touching, humorous, and it is crafted very well. The two poems as epigraphs are excellent, too.

La gringa is a crowd pleaser and the pioneering play of Hispanic-American Theater

"La gringa" by Carmen Rivera is an outstanding play that never fails to speak and please its audiences. The play premiered at New York's Repertorio Español theater back in 1994 and continues to play today. "La gringa" tells the story of María, a young woman born and raised in New York to Puerto Rican parents. She decides to go on vacation to Puerto Rico to meet her family. She falls in love with the island and decides to stay but she soon finds that she is not welcome by her own family and that her intentions to stay are seen with suspicion. Some of her family members do not consider her Puerto Rican and call her a "gringa" (or American) although back in the states she isn't considered an American. The play spurs the debate about what it means to be Puerto Rican (or American for that matter) but leaves the final interpretation to the audiences. "La gringa" is a wonderful play that speaks not only to Puerto Ricans but to anyone that has experienced the isolation and the identity complications that come along with living in a country where one is a minority.

A must for contemporary Latin@ Theatre

Students will identify and love this incredible piece! Guaranteed. A sound alternative to the "tired" texts which have become a staple of minority literature and Latina/o theatre courses. I strongly recommend the work of Carmen Rivera as well as a departure from the Nuyorican dramatic texts of Miguel Pinero and Jose Rivera.
