This concise volume is Oxford's course book for the Ancient Greek World, containing 180 extracts from historical sources, translated, organized and placed in context with introductory passages and historical commentary. As such it goes up against two other other books sharing the same source-collection approach, those from JACT and Routledge, and it is useful to note the principal differences, mainly related to length and coverage (they are all very similarly priced). The Oxford volume covers by far the longest period, starting earlier than either of the other two with the origins of the polis system, and finishing much later with coverage of the Hellenistic Age (the others cover only the Archaic and Classical Ages, in the case of the JACT volume only Classical Athens). Despite this the Oxford volume is the most concise of the three, although well illustrated and clearly laid out. The maps are a particular strength. Thus although the Routledge book undoubtedly contains more information, the Oxford volume feels much more student friendly, and contains a broader coverage than the JACT one.

Review
Advance Praise: "Readings in Greek History: Sources and Interpretations is of very high quality. It provides an excellent selection of sources that illustrate many aspects of Greek politics and society as they expanded in the ancient world. The sources are well-chosen for both more and less
famous authors. Their translations should be easily read and understood by contemporary students. . . . The text offers a wealth of illustrative, entertaining, and insightful views of the Greek past. In detail and in depth, from the classical core to border regions and confrontations, these
fascinating sources provide a foundation for understanding the Ancient Greeks in their times."
--Brian Pavlac, Professor of History, King's College
"A tremendous range of issues in Greek political, social, and cultural history have been incorporated. . . . The authors have chosen to encompass the entire sweep of Hellenic history down to the Roman conquest."
--Thomas Figueira, Rutgers University
"The quality of the selections in terms of topics and organization is very high."
--Lorraine Attreed, College of the Holy Cross

Better Quality than Described!!
By Lory
I was pleasantly surprised when I received the book and it looked practically new! The quality was much better than I expected...there weren't ANY writing marks in the book which was very nice! It also arrived faster than I expected, my first experience buying on amazon was very easy, convenient, and I definitely plan to buy my books on here for my future college classes.
As far as the context of the book it is a fun read. I'm reading it for my history class along side a textbook that just provides facts. I prefer reading this book because it gives you a better understanding with the direct experts from the different writers.

Got this edition instead of the second edition for my Greek Civilization class. It is, from what I can see, almost identical to the second edition, except that the topics are on different pages (there seems to be more in the second one than the first, but if you don't mind having to Google some of the topics that aren't in the first edition, it is perfect).

Greek History

This text offered small pieces of information - thus I found it lacking in substance and not very beneficial with regard to the overall contribution of knowledge within the field.
