The Private Eye, by Brian K. Vaughan

"Colorful and relevant..." -Slate

From the creator of the New York Times bestselling series SAGA, comes the three-time, Eisner nominated, PanelSyndicate.com's digital comics sensation THE PRIVATE EYE! Finally, this book is coming to print in a beautiful deluxe hardcover edition!

Set in an inevitable future of where everyone has a secret identity, THE PRIVATE EYE is an eerily prescient sci-fi mystery about an unlicensed private investigator who stumbles onto the most important case of his life.

The series is set in 2076, a time after "the cloud has burst", revealing everyone's secrets. As a result, there is no more Internet, and people are excessively guarded about their identity, to the point of appearing only masked in public.

"Readers and retailers have been begging us for a physical version of this story ever since we first announced our hard-boiled parable about the future of privacy in America, so when the time came, Marcos and I knew that we had to go with Image Comics, the most creator-friendly publisher of print comics ever." -Brian K. Vaughan

private lives return after the collapse of the internet
By Frank L. Greenagel Jr.
This story was originally serialized online. A buddy of mine told me that it was great and that it would never be available in print. I told him that I don't like to read comics/books on the internet and I refuse to get a tablet or kindle. Clearly, I'm quite pleased (2x over) that a print edition has come into existence.

It's a long framed book, made up of 300+ pages, a strong cover and sturdy spine. The pages are high quality and the coloring shines off of them. Physically, it is very nicely put together.

It's a very good story (my biggest complaint is that the murder that sets off the plot of the story doesn't make much sense). It is set about 50-60 years into the future in Los Angeles. Global warming has raised the ocean levels, marijuana is sold in Marlboro-like packages, the media has been nationalized and most significantly, the internet is gone.

My favorite character is the protagonist's grandfather - a miillenial-turned-senior-citizen who still shows the side effects of the prescription drugs that he was jacked up on at the start of the 21st century, has sagging tattoos (the current adults and teenagers don't), and so dearly misses the joys of the iphone and internet gaming. Vaughan uses him to comment on America in 2015. It's wonderful, funny and interesting.

My copy was constructed out of order
By Duke
I really enjoyed the book, I have always like BKV's writing style. Overall the story and art are great, but that is not the problem, the problem is when the physical copy was made at which ever factory some of the pages were put in wrong, in my copy at the end of chapter 3 there are the last 2 pages of chapter 9 and about half of chapter 10 and after about 4 or 5 pages then goes back in order to chapter 4. Kind of annoying and it made reading it somewhat disjointed. But having said that the story is great and I cant recommend it enough, I just hope your copy is in the proper order.

Great story and art in a dystopian future with tv and no internet
By Wayne A McCoy
'Private Eye: Deluxe Edition' by Brian K. Vaughan with gorgeous art by Marcos Martin is a collection of the digital comic from PanelSyndicate.com. I wasn't aware of the title, but it hit all the same buttons as I miss from cyberpunk type things.

It's the near future, and everything is ablaze in eye-popping color (thanks to Munsta Vicente's eye popping colors). The internet has died in a spectacular cloudburst. Global warming means there is a giant sea wall in Santa Monica to keep LA dry. Anonymity is kept behind garish masks that everyone wears. Strangest of all, the press is now the police, and private investigators are known as paparazzi. Intrigued yet?

In this world, we meet our protagonist, wearing a strange camouflage coat, and going by the initials P.I. (among other things). P.I. finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation that may lead to seats of power and a strange plot to overthrow things. He'll make new allies and endanger old ones along the way.

It was originally a digital comic and the aspect is horizontal pages instead of vertical. This collection maintains that ratio and I thought it was an interesting change. The story is great and the visuals are colorful and interesting, with all kinds of weird details tucked into the frames. This collects all 10 issues, and I'm glad I got a chance to read it.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, Image Comics, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
